Affordable Rural Housing & Community Land Trusts

Affordable rural housing is an issue in many small, remote communities. Community Land Trusts can be an effective approach to tackling this challenge, providing affordable, appropriate housing for rural residents unable to crack the commercial housing market.

Brenda Torpy, CEO of the Champlain (Vermont) Housing Trust, discusses her approach to stewarding land for the benefit of the community, and how it created long-term affordability impacts. The Champlain Housing Trust is one of the oldest and most widely known Community Land Trusts in North America. Brenda shares how Burlington, Vermont, benefited from the low-risk, high-impact creation of a Community Land Trust. This presentation was sponsored by the False Creek South Neighbourhood Association in Vancouver, in September, 2016.
